Marble Kitchen Countertops. Yay or Nay?

One of the hottest trends in Chattanooga:  White Mable Kitchen Countertops.  Oh, they are beautiful!  But your neighbor told you about her friend at church who has white marble kitchen countertops and says that they are stained... and that lady in your bunko group said that hers have visible scratches across the surface... What to do? What to do!?

Well, here is what you need to know about Marble Kitchen Countertops:

1 – Marble is porous.  It will absorb liquid pigments if they are allowed to linger after a spill.

2 – Marble is a soft stone.  It will scratch if cutting boards are not used.  And straight edges will chip if "dinged" with a harder object.

OK.  So, you ask, "I shouldn't get white marble kitchen countertops?"

Well, no, I wouldn't go that far!  You just need to know these things and you need to design around them.  For instance, to avoid highly visible scratch marks, make sure your marble kitchen countertops are honed.  To reduce the likelihood that your stone will stain, be sure to upgrade your sealer and be vigilant with spilled liquids.  To minimize chipped edges do not specify a standard or even and eased edges – look into an Ogee or a Full Bull nose detail.

Regardless, you should be prepared for any marble kitchen countertop (white or not) to take on a bit of a patina over the years.  I think wear-marks add character and – in some cases – are nicer and maybe more endearing than a brand new installation... but that's just me.
